On Wednesday, March 12, we will read "Handicap: A Liberation" by Anaïs Van Ertvelde. In the book, the author explores how disability is not only a personal experience, but also a social and political issue. Born herself with a shorter right forearm, Van Ertvelde reflects on how our society views people with disabilities and how this shapes our view of art, work, intimacy and citizenship. The book is a powerful exploration of what it means to have to carve out a place for yourself in a world that is not set up for everyone. Van Ertvelde shows that identifying as a person with a disability is not only a challenge, but also a liberation - an opportunity to radically rethink our ideas of inclusion and equality.

During the Literary Café, we'll chat openly about the book of the month, each time with an intersectional feminist angle. Together we provide a connecting conversation in a safe environment. Your impressions of the book and your own experiences with the theme are central. Our volunteer will take you through the book. You can read the book beforehand, but that is not a must.
